Hospital Denies Restraint Led to Patient’s Death

HYANNIS, Mass.

A Massachusetts man has died after allegedly being place in a chokehold by a Cape Cod Hospital security guard. The Hyannis, Mass.-based hospital is denying any use of excessive force in the incident.

Daniel Ryan, 35, was initially at the hospital to visit his wife, but according to wbztv.com, he became irrational and was taken to the emergency room for a psychiatric evaluation. Ryan then fled the emergency room but was stopped and allegedly placed in a chokehold by hospital security. According to news reports, he was rendered unconscious and was later admitted to the hospital on life support. Ryan died three weeks after the incident.

In a written statement released by the hospital, there was no indication that a chokehold was ever applied to Ryan or that excessive force was used during his restraint, reports wbztv.com.

The District Attorney’s office is investigating the death.
