Healthcare Group Settles Hurricane Katrina-Victim Lawsuit

Published: March 30, 2011

TORONTO — Tenet Healthcare Corp. has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit over deaths at one of its New Orleans facilities that was flooded by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The amount of the settlement was not disclosed.

The lawsuit, which was filed by the family of Leonard Preston, a deceased patient, claimed that Tenet had no emergency plan to evacuate in place, the Dallas Morning News reports.  The lawsuit was also filed on behalf of other relatives of deceased patients.

The facility named in the suit, Memorial Medical Center, was submerged in 12 feet of water after the hurricane hit. Patients died while waiting on a parking garage floor for helicopters.

Tenet has settled 11 other Hurricane Katrina-related lawsuits. It no longer owns hospitals in Louisiana.
