New Jersey credit-card processor Heartland Payment Systems Inc. disclosed potentially the largest data breach ever reported. Heartland reported that hackers compromised its computer network and gained access to its customers’ information. The company handles nearly 100 million card transactions each month.
The company processes payments for more than 250,000 businesses, including restaurants and small retails stores. It began receiving fraudulent activity reports in late 2008 from MasterCard and Visa, according to the Washington Post.
The largest known data breach involved retail company TJX Cos. in 2005 and 2006 when 45 million card numbers were stolen.
