KENT, Ohio – Kent State University sent an E-mail to approximately 19,000 current and prospective students warning them that their personal information has been stolen from a database containing student applications.
The message was sent Jan. 13 and said the data stolen included student names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth. The information could be used to obtain additional personal information of the victims.
University officials encouraged students to keep an eye on their credit accounts and contact one of the three main credit reporting agencies so fraud alerts could be placed on their Social Security numbers. As of press time, no unusual credit activity has been reported.
The identity of the perpetrator has not been determined, but investigators believe the suspect accessed the database from a foreign country. An investigation is ongoing.
