NEWARK, N.J. – According to University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) officials, the social security numbers and other confidential financial information of nearly 2,000 UMDNJ students and alumni has been accessed by hackers.
The breach was discovered Feb. 24, but school officials did not disclose the break-in while they investigated the incident. About 700 students and 1,150 alumni may have been affected. Initial reports indicate, however, that no information was actually taken.
Students were notified last week of the breach and informed that they are now at an increased risk of identity theft. Authorities are continuing to investigate the breach.
Hackers previously attacked UMDNJ’s payroll computer but were unable to retrieve usable information because the targeted computer only contained test data.
