Hacker Intrusion Suspected at University of Texas at Dallas

RICHARDSON, Texas – The names and Social Security numbers of 6,000 University of Texas-Dallas employees, applicants and students may have fallen into the hands of hackers, school officials said on Dec. 13.

Staff and faculty members employed by the university from January 1999 to August 2005, and students, faculty and applicants belonging to the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science were affected by the security breach. Only Johnsson School applicants from 1993 forward were exposed.

The hackers may also have obtained addresses, E-mail addresses and telephone numbers of some of the victims.

According to the university, there is no evidence to suggest the information has been used or distributed. The computer system intrusion was discovered on Dec. 10.
