More than 160,000 social security numbers were compromised after a hacker breached a system at the University of North Carolina’s school of medicine at Chapel Hill.
The university began notifying 163,000 women about the potential of their personal information being obtained by the hacker. The compromised system contained information that was collected as part of a federally funded mammography research project, according to computerworld.com.
The breach was first discovered in July; however, investigators believe the hacking might have taken place over two years ago.
