Hacker Accesses Info of 15,500 Students Using District Computer

Published: June 12, 2012

EUGENE, Ore. — An unknown person was able to access confidential files containing Eugene School District 4J student information, including names, addresses and Social Security numbers.

Data for 15,500 students were accessed through a district computer, CR80 News reports. Only some of those students had their Social Security numbers compromised. The district is in the process of making a list of those students.

The breach is believed to have taken place during the week of June 4, according to a district press release. The confidential files that were accessed are used to transfer data between student information and student meal programs. They included names, student ID numbers, addresses, dates of birth, and in some cases phone numbers, Social Security numbers, and/or students’ free or reduced-price school lunch status.

The district has initiated an investigation of the breach and changed system passwords, as well as limited the student personal data shared in the school meal system.
