Published: February 23, 2009

More than 97,200 students, faculty and staff at the University of Florida are at risk for identity theft after a foreign hacker gained access to the university’s computer system. It is the second time in less than four weeks that the university has had to notify students, staff and faculty about a cyber attack.

The stolen files include names and Social Security numbers of those who have used the University’s Grove computer system between 1996 and 2003. The information breach occurred on December 22, 2008.

According to InternetNews.com, the university’s system is so antiquated, the IT department isn’t clear on exactly what the hacker did. The university is conducting an internal review to identify similar systems that could also be hacked.
