Georgia High School Puts on First Integrated Prom

ASHBURN, Ga. – Students at Georgia’s Turner County High School attended their first integrated prom in school history.

About two-thirds of the school’s 160 upper-class students attended the breakthrough event April 21. Despite a history of black students and white students each putting on their own unofficial proms, four senior class officers this year prompted school Principal Chad Stone to create an integrated event. With $5,000 in discretionary funds and another $5,000 from supporters who heard of the event from national news, Stone put together the peanut-farming community’s first school-sponsored prom.

According to the Associated Press, black students easily outnumbered white students, many of which still attended their own unofficial prom the week before.
