Fresno State Student Kills 1, Injures 2 in Off-Campus Shooting

FRESNO, Calif. – A California State University, Fresno, student opened fire killing 1 person and injuring two others in an off-campus apartment the morning of May 8.

According to the Associated Press, a police SWAT team was communicating with the suspected shooter, Jonquel Brooks, 19, of Hayward, Calif., trying to convince him to surrender. According to police, the conflict stemmed from an earlier altercation at the apartment.

A university spokesperson indicated that classes on campus remained open following the incident. University officials felt there was no danger posed to the rest of campus with the suspect contained in the apartment complex.

The university did send notice to its students, faculty and staff via its Web site. The apartment complex owner alerted its residents via E-mail of the incident.

According to authorities, the survivors of the shooting did not incur life-threatening injuries.
