HANOVER, Va. – A fraternity at Dartmouth College is facing felony charges after a prospective student was hospitalized for alcohol poisoning. The student, a 17-year-old boy from an out-of-state high school, was visiting the campus as a recruit for the swim team.
The boy was being sponsored by a current Dartmouth student who was showing him around campus, according to Union Leader. He later attended a party at Psi Upsilon where he consumed several beers and mixed drinks. He was later found lying on the steps of Thayer Dining Hall and was transported to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
This is the fourth pending case against Psi Upsilon. If convicted, the fraternity could pay up to $100,000 in fines per count.
The Student and Presidential Alcohol Harm Reduction Committee has introduced several initiatives to curb on-campus drinking, such as alcohol education, training and a shuttle service. However, according to Hanover Police Chief Nicholas Giaccone, no real improvements have been made.
