Former Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) Police Chief Sam Beamon has pled no contest to willfully failing to properly investigate 78 crimes on campus, which included 12 sexual assaults.
Beamon will not serve any jail time. Instead, he will be on probation, as well as be required to do community service, reports WTKR.
The former chief was charged with a misdemeanor after a yearlong State Bureau of Investigation uncovered that he failed to investigate the crimes between Jan. 1, 2010 and May 13, 2013. Beamon resigned from his position at ECSU after local police discovered that more than 100 cases dating back to 2007 were unresolved.
In a statement released to WTKR, ESCU says it has since improved it campus safety infrastructure, implemented Title IX and Clery training, adopted new policies on sexual misconduct, stalking and dating violence, as well as launched a new women’s center.
