Student Claims Campus Police Mishandled Rape Case

CLARKSBURG, W. Va. — A former Glenville State College student claims campus police did not properly investigate her report that she was raped in her dormitory two years ago.

Amanda Smith filed a lawsuit Sept. 17 claiming that campus police not only failed to conduct a routine investigation, they lost important evidence, The West Virginia Record reports. Smith also alleges that this was not the first time either campus police or GSC officials have shown deliberate indifference toward alleged rape victims.

Police failed to collect the clothes Smith was wearing when she was allegedly drugged and raped, as well as her bed sheets, according to the lawsuit. Also, the cups used to mix and serve the drink that allegedly knocked Smith unconscious were destroyed before they could be collected.
