UNIVERSITY, Miss. – A former student of the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) pleaded guilty to manslaughter by culpable negligence Oct. 15.
The former student, Daniel Cummings, was sentenced to 20 years.
Cummings was accused of dragging campus police officer, Robert Langley, to death. At the time, Langley was performing a routine traffic stop.
Authorities say that Cummings had drugs and alcohol in his system when Langley pulled him over. When Langley reached into Cummings’ vehicle to turn it off, Cummings drove away leaving the officer attached to the car.
Langley was dragged 200 feet. He hit his head when he fell to the ground and died at a hospital shortly after.
Cummings was not faced with the death penalty at the request of Langley’s family. Langley was a four-year veteran of the school’s police department and had recently returned from serving in the National Guard in Afghanistan. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, two sons and two stepdaughters.This was the first on-duty fatality for the department.
