BURNABY, B.C. — A forensic patient escaped from Burnaby General Hospital on Jan. 7 when one of her shackles was removed so she could use the bathroom. Susan Smith, 46, had been arrested earlier in the day for shoplifting and assaulting a security guard.
Smith was jailed at the Burnaby RCMP detachment before a medical issue arose, requiring that she be transported to the hospital, CTV News reports. She was taken to the facility in shackles and handcuffs.
Around 4:30 p.m., a portable toilet was taken to Smith’s cubicle and one of her shackles was removed. The officer guarding Smith left the area so that she could have privacy. When the officer returned, Smith was missing.
Security footage shows Smith exiting the hospital at 4:41 p.m. She has yet to be apprehended. A warrant has been obtained for her arrest on charges of theft, probation violation and escaping custody.
