FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Students at Fort Valley State University (FVSU) will see many more officers in blue patrolling the streets when they return to campus for the 2007-2008 school year.
FVSU plans to increase security by bringing in more officers for foot, vehicle and bike patrol. Security cards are a new requirement at some of the dorms. The gates on Carver Drive will remain locked at all times except when opened by 24-7 call-box operators, and any cars entering the campus will need to show ID at one of four manned check-points.
Chief Brenda Jones says the upgrades are not the byproduct of an off-campus shooting last year involving two students. According to her, the plans have been in the making since FVSU built Wildcat Commons, a new housing development. However, many of the ideas sprung from student forums held after the shooting, including monthly safety meetings.
Jones says there were no major crimes on campus last year. Most of the calls to campus police involve stolen electronics such as cell phones and laptops.
