Florida A&M University (FAMU) has increased its computer security after a former student was convicted of grade-tampering charges. According to Tallahassee.com, a small group of students made about 650 changes to 90 students’ transcripts.

FAMU graduate Marcus Barrington was convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, unauthorized computer access, three counts of aggravated identity theft and one substantive count of unauthorized computer access on April 3. He will be sentenced on June 8.

In response to Barrington’s convictions, the university has beefed up its cyber security to prevent future unauthorized access to the university’s computer system. A software security consultant was hired, and in-depth computer audits were conducted on a weekly basis.

Other students may be involved in the security breach that targeted transcript records. School administrators are continuing their ongoing investigation.
