Fire Department Questions University’s Safety

VENTURA, CALIF.
Published: November 25, 2008

Ventura County Fire Protection District has deemed California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) as having inadequate fire safety services. Emergency response time has been the greatest concern.

The university will be building a new, central road to the campus that will be shorter, wider and faster for responding fire departments. It currently takes firefighters 18 to 20 minutes to respond. The new road is expected to be nearly a mile shorter than the current path.

The university was also encouraged to install fire sprinklers in all new buildings. Currently, only state fire marshal-regulated buildings have fire sprinklers.
