As millions of students return to campus or arrive for the first time, FEMA reminds everyone of the need to be prepared for emergencies before they strike. By going to
ready.gov, students can learn a learn few simple steps they can take now to get ready.
“Emergencies can happen any time, any where, even on campus,” said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. “By getting a plan, making a kit, and getting training – like CPR or first aid – America’s college students can be better prepared to handle any emergency that may arise. So as students across the country start to hit the books, I encourage everyone to do their part, as a member of our emergency management team, and go to ready.gov and get prepared.”
At ready.gov, students will find numerous resources, including a check list of what should be in an emergency kit, information on how to put together an emergency communications plan, and a host of online resources like web PSAs and a widget that students can host on their Facebook pages, websites or blogs.
FEMA encourages students to check with their school regarding emergency communications, including if schools send out warnings or notifications through mobile devices or social media sites in the case of an emergency. In the event of an emergency, students should follow the guidance of their school and local officials. Students moving to new cities can click on their state on this map (www.ready.gov/america/local/index.html) to find resources and information on preparedness in their new communities.
In addition to Ready.gov, FEMA currently utilizes a multitude of social media sites and encourages students to become a fan, follow, or join.
