The FCC is pushing for the incorporation of newer technology into 911 emergency requests; this could include SMS text messaging, images and video. The “Next Gen 911” project will help to lay the groundwork for the collection and distribution of digital information during an emergency.
Although text messaging may seem like the next logical step in 911 services, ABC News warns that there may be a long wait. The Transportation Safety Advancement Group (TSAG) – the organization that will be carrying out any 911 technological changes – will present the recommendations of first responders on this subject in February 2011.
The research is supported by The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO). The group stated in a press release that they are committed to working with the FCC to ensure that consumers’ expectations of service run parallel to the development of Next Gen 911 systems throughout the country.
