NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A Haitian man who claims the founder of a charity in Haiti sexually abused him when he was 15 has filed a lawsuit against Fairfield University and others for $20 million.
The lawsuit alleges that Douglas Perlitz, the founder of the Haitian charity, sexually assaulted the unnamed victim, the Associated Press reports. The suit claims that the defendants, including a former chaplain at the university and the Society of Jesus of New England, ignored warning signs and failed to prevent or stop abuse.
Last month, Fairfield University and others reached a $12 million settlement with boys, who attended Project Pierre Toussaint School in Cap-Haitien and were sexually abused by Perlitz. The charity’s founder was sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting the children.
The victim’s attorney is currently investigating 31 other claims of sexual abuse by Perlitz.
