A man is in critical condition after an off duty police officer shot him in the neck when he became violent in an Ohio hospital August 26.

Police say the man, whose name has not been released, was being taken to the psychiatric unit of Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights around midnight when he began fighting with the hospital staff and Cleveland Clinic police transporting him, according to fox8.com.

At one point police used a Taser on the man but it failed to subdue him and the man allegedly took the Taser and used it against a security officer and a nurse. The man also reportedly reached for an officer’s gun during the struggle. A policeman says he eventually fired a shot at the man when he charged at the off duty police officer with the Taser.

In all, a hospital statement reports the man “assaulted five personnel, including three police officers (two Cleveland Clinic and one Garfield Hts. Police officer) and two emergency department nurses.”
