After a 90 minute standoff, a lab technician at St. John’s Mercy Urgent Care Center was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend on Nov. 14. The gunman was then shot by SWAT team members.
Gary Sheets, 45, entered the facility with a gun just after 4:30 p.m. and ordered everyone in the building to leave. According to the Associated Press, he then went to the second floor and confronted Jenenne Meadows, 47. For about 90 minutes he held her hostage, allowing her to call loved ones. At about 6:30 p.m., Sheets shot Meadows twice in the abdomen. SWAT members then stormed in, fatally shooting Sheets. Meadows died in surgery a short time later.
According to KansasCity.com, the victim and gunman had been exchanging angry text messages weeks prior to the shooting. They had broken up in May.
