An informal study by the Utah Seismic Safety Commission in 2006 suggests that half of Utah’s schools are vulnerable to collapse from a major earthquake, according to Fox News.
Roger Evans, commission chairman, said half of Utah’s schools were built before 1975. Since that time, building codes have changed to require structural reinforcements; however, some schools have not been upgraded.
In January, the commission and a group of engineers will ask the Legislature to fund a comprehensive survey of the condition of Utah schools. For the past two years, that request has been denied.
