Duquesne Basketball Player Recovers from 2 Gunshot Wounds to the Head
PITTSBURGH – Duquesne University shooting victim Sam Ashaolu, 23, has recovered after being shot twice in the head.
Ashaolu was one of five Duquesne basketball players injured on Sept. 17 when a man opened fire at a group of the basketball players after a school social event. Two of the bullets hit Ashaolu in the back of the head.
Dr. Daniel Bursick, chief of Mercy Hospital’s neurosurgery division and one of Ashaolu’s surgeons, said that what saved Ashaolu’s life were his strong neck muscles and skull, which absorbed much of the bullets’ impact. Though Ashaolu still suffered brain injury, the injury is expected to heal so long as swelling and pressure to the brain are kept to a minimum.
