DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University is installing seven outdoor siren systems throughout the campus as a last-resort warning by chance there is a major emergency on campus, such as a natural disaster or a violent incident.
The sirens are mounted 55 feet off the ground, and the sound measures about 72 decibels, which can travel half a mile. The siren sounds have been mixed so they won’t be confused with ambulance or police sirens.
Although the school is installing this mass notification equipment, which will also serve as a public address system, administrators are encouraging students to register their cell phones to receive emergency text messages.
The system is expected to be in place and ready to test in August.
