VANCOUVER, BC — Staff, police and patients’ families have become concerned over the lack of security in the psychiatric facility at Vancouver General Hospital.
The psychiatric units in the hospital are not designed for treating mentally ill patients, as the building is 70 years old, CBC News reports. Patients share rooms with three others and the facility lacks secured outdoor space and adequate ventilation.
Staff and families claim drug dealers enter the facility easily and give patients cocaine and methamphetamine. Mentally ill patients are also able to leave because the front and back doors of the hospital are propped open.
