A Spartanburg County (S.C.) school bus driver is being called a hero for successfully evacuating 56 students off of her bus before it burst into flames.
The incident happened May 9 when driver Teresa Stroble was taking the children to Duncan Elementary, Beech Springs Intermediate and Byrnes High School, reports WSPA. After two students told her about smoke in the back of the bus, she immediately pulled the vehicle over. She then evacuated all 56 children from the bus in less than a minute.
“She did exactly what she was trained to do,” says Superintendent Scott Turner. “She was calm. She kept the students calm. She made sure they were safe. They were her first priority. She’s our hero today.”
District staff and officials from the South Carolina Department of Education are now investigating what caused the fire. The bus that caught fire passed state inspection last summer. However, this line of 1995 buses has had issues with fires and overheating in the past.
