TELL CITY, Ind. — A man suspected of domestic violence was shot and killed after he fatally shot a Tell City police officer.
Sergeant Heather Glenn, 47, was shot and killed by 34-year-old Sean Hubert at Perry County Memorial Hospital early Monday, reports Courier & Press. Hubert was then fatally shot by other responding officers.
According to an Indiana State Police news release, an unidentified female was reportedly receiving treatment at the hospital for undisclosed injuries sustained in a “domestic dispute” with Hubert. Glenn, who was investigating the incident, interviewed the victim and then participated in a search for Hubert with other Tell City officers. After the officers left the hospital, the victim told healthcare workers that Hubert was headed to the hospital.
Around 12:50 a.m., local police and sheriff’s deputies responded and confronted Hubert near the emergency room. Glenn made contact with Hubert and attempted to subdue him with an “electronic-controlled weapon” but it was ineffective, the news release said. During a brief struggle, Hubert produced a firearm and shot Glenn. Officers with the Tell City and Cannelton Police departments returned fire, striking Hubert. Both were treated at the scene but died of their injuries.
Around 10:30 p.m. Monday, a Deaconess Health System spokesperson said the hospital’s emergency room would remain open but that all other services were closed. The hospital is working closely with local law enforcement, according to a statement.
Glenn worked for the Perry County Sheriff’s Office and the Tell City Police Department for nearly 20 years. Tell City Police Chief Derrick Lawalin called Glenn’s death a “tremendous loss.”
“We’ve lost a dear colleague, a dear friend,” he said. “Sergeant Glenn, she’s a cornerstone of our department. We are truly heartbroken.”
Tell City Police held a vigil Monday night at the town’s City Hall. Glenn’s police vehicle was put on display for mourners to pay their respects.
