The Newport-Mesa Unified School District has settled a lawsuit filed by a female student who was threatened with rape by three football players because she was the lead actress in her school’s musical production of “Rent.”

The lawsuit claims that the varsity athletes posted a video on YouTube that threatened the actress with rape and called another student homophobic slurs. According to the Los Angeles Times, school officials did little to protect the victim and some even retaliated against her.

The news source says the district will provide harassment and discrimination prevention training to Corona del Mar High School students, teachers and administrators and other district officials.

The production of “Rent” was cancelled earlier this year by the principal due his concerns over its content. It was later reinstated.
