District Fires 226 Security Officers, Hires Private Firm
DETROIT—In an effort to save funds, the Detroit Public Schools (DPS) fired all of its security officers and hired a private firm to provide in-school security.
As many as 226 officers were let go on July 30, according to Freep.com. The district will now use Securitas Security Services until June 30, 2011. The decision is expected to save the district an estimated $5.5 million. DPS is currently facing a deficit of $363 million.
DPS security officers protested the privatization in July, stating that the change was union-busting and a danger to students.
