The Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) is expected to make cuts to its school security office in fall in an effort to save $24 million of its budget. The district also plans to reduce its Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) services now that it is expected to pay the full cost to station officers on campuses. The district previously shared the cost of the officers with the police department.
The district plans to retain the officers and is in negotiations with the city to create a financial arrangement.
The district will also be suspending services of LBPD juvenile car officers, who patrolled the campuses and responded to service calls as part of its partnership with the district. The plan still has to be approved by the school board before cutbacks begin in the fall semester.
