PLEASANT GROVE, Utah – The Alpine School District has placed the lunch manager at Pleasant Grove Junior High on leave after she allegedly served a diabetic, special needs student pizza that had been placed in a garbage can.
The incident occurred when Sierra Prince, an eighth-grade student at PGJH, asked cafeteria workers for a piece of pizza for lunch after taking her insulin dose. Staff members told her the wasn’t any left; however, when she asked again, a kitchen employee allegedly grabbed a slice from the top of the trash can and handed it to Prince, ABC13 reports.
When Prince’s mother found out, she immediately contacted school officials to complain.
District officials maintain that the 10-minute bell had rung and lunch staff had already cleaned up most of the food when Prince asked for the pizza. Officials claim the pizza was still in the box and the box was at the top of the garbage can, Deseret News reports.
School officials are currently investigating the incident.
To make sure Prince’s health needs are met, a new aide, who is medically trained and knows more about appropriate carb counts and related issues, has been assigned to monitor Prince.
