DETROIT – A high school freshman was shot on campus on Jan. 9 but didn’t realize it until he made it home.
The Finney High School student, whose name has not been released, was grazed by a bullet in his thigh during his science class. The bullet came from a small-caliber handgun that accidentally went off in the classroom.
The teacher in charge of the class mistakenly took the shot to be a student prank or a firecracker.
The student said in a report that he felt achy as he left school. Once he made it home, he found the gunshot wound. He was treated at a nearby hospital and released.
Sources familiar with the incident said the school’s metal detectors were not working Jan. 9; however, new machines were installed the following day. The sources did not offer their names because they were not authorized to speak about the situation by the Detroit Public Schools.
The student responsible for bringing the gun was arrested on the evening of Jan. 9 at his home. His name has not been released.
