More information about the man who was shot after escaping police custody on USC’s medical campus has been released as the investigation continues.
Freddy Bailon, who reportedly managed to get away from officers during a medical exam at the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center, was shot and apprehended by police on Sept. 27.
Bailon, 36, has been charged with 10 felony counts that carry more than a 30-year prison sentence, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Los Angeles police officers first came in contact with Bailon on Sept. 26 while they were investigating the disappearance of a 15-year-old girl.
Officers were approaching an apartment in El Sereno when Bailon appeared in the doorway holding a knife to the girl’s neck. The girl was able to break free from Bailon and he eventually surrendered.

The following day two uniformed officers and a detective escorted Bailon to the medical center. During that visit, the suspect reportedly got away from the officers and fled the building. Although police say Bailon was handcuffed at one point in the hospital, it is unclear if he was handcuffed when he escaped.
With police in pursuit, Bailon allegedly stole a woman’s SUV. At some point during the chase, an officer shot Bailon and he crashed the SUV into a tree outside of USC’s School of Pharmacy. The suspect was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Now Bailon faces charges including committing lewd acts upon a child as police continue to investigate. Two of the officers involved were wearing body-worn cameras, and police are trying to determine if nearby surveillance footage captured the theft or shooting.
No one else was injured in the incident.
