Data Breach Exposes 850,000 Blue Cross Doctors

Every physician in the nation who contracts with BlueCross BlueShield is now at risk for identity theft after a file containing their unencrypted information was stolen.

According to amednews.com, the file was on an employee-owned laptop, which was stolen from a car Aug. 27. Notification of the physicians about the data breach did not begin until mid-October.

About 850,000 doctors are affected, although approximately 187,000 of the individuals’ information did not include their Social Security numbers.

BlueCross Blue Shield is offering free credit monitoring services to those doctors whose Social Security numbers were stolen.
