NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – California State University, Northridge has announced a new policy that requires fraternities, sororities and all campus groups to submit plans in advance about membership recruitment and initiation activities.
The policy change is in response to the death of Armando Villa, 19, who collapsed during a hike, organized by the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, in the Angeles National Forest. Villa and members of his pledge class had been walking barefoot and had run out of water.
Pi Kappa Phi has been suspended on campus and is currently being investigated by the Sheriff’s Department and an independent investigator hired by the university.
Meanwhile all clubs and organizations will be required to submit a plan detailing their planned recruitment and initiation activities to a university adviser. Additionally, all prospective members will be required to undergo a program prior to any recruitment activities, MyFoxLA.com reports
