FRESNO, Calif. – California State University, Fresno officials have approved a policy limiting classroom and faculty office security camera surveillance.
Concerned about an infringement of their academic freedom, Fresno State’s Academic Senate, which is a panel of 68 professors that decides campus rules, passed the measure unanimously leaving final approval in the hands of University President John Welty.
Under the new policy, cameras may be installed in teaching or research labs only under limited circumstances with faculty supervision. With a student, faculty and staff population of approximately 24,000, the university still allows campus police to work undercover in plain clothes.
