COPS Grants Improve Irvine School Safety

IRVINE, Calif. – Irvine will receive a grant of $185,000 as part of the $14.8 million grants the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, will give out to 152 local law enforcement agencies in 36 states, to upgrade school security.

Awarded through the COPS Secure Our Schools program, Irvine will receive up to 50 percent of the total cost to install metal detectors, locks, lighting and other equipment in order to prevent crime.  Half the cost of security training and other actions that will provide improved security can also be paid with grant money.

COPS has provided more than $53 million to improve campus safety throughout the nation’s communities. Through programs such as Safe Schools Initiative, COPS in Schools, School-Based Partnerships, and Secure Our Schools, COPS has provided approximately $883 million to American schools to enhance campus security.

Irvine’s grant marks the fourth largest in the state of California. California has received $1.8 million in grants for 12 cities.
