Copper Wire Thefts Cost California District Thousands

Published: July 23, 2008

CARMICHAEL, Calif. – Thieves are stripping copper wires from San Juan Unified School District’s schools for money, according to Sacbee.com. In one incident, the thieves also cut the line that connected to Kingswood Elementary School’s surveillance system.

According to district officials, copper wiring theft has cost the district almost $150,000. Vandals have targeted five schools in the district.

District officials attribute the thefts to the bad economy, citing that copper wire can be very lucrative at a scrap metal yard. When 2,400 feet of copper wire was stolen from El Camino High School, the district estimated the loss to be $7,200.

Additionally, the district faced a $6 million budget cut in the spring.
