BLACKSBURG, Va. — A convicted murderer who was sentenced to death for fatally shooting a hospital security officer and a sheriff’s deputy was denied an appeal by the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday.
William Morva was a jail inmate in August 2006, who had been taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital to treat an injury. Morva fatally shot Derrick McFarland as he escaped from the facility. The following day, he shot Cpl. Eric Sutphin, who had been searching for the escapee on a walking trail.
The suspect was convicted of three counts of capital murder for killing more than one person in three years, which is a capital offense in Virginia, according to the Roanoke Times. A jury sentenced Morva to death in 2008.
