CHICAGO – The Cook County Board voted to disband a controversial hospital police unit at Stroger Hospital.
The unit has faced scrutiny with accusations of brutality culminating in an incident where a Chicago Sun-Times reporter claims he was knocked to the ground and handcuffed by officers at a hospital demonstration. Local radio station WBBM 780 also conducted an investigation, unveiling members of the unit having prior criminal records.
According to WBBM, hospital security will likely be privatized after the police force is disbanded Sept. 1.
