BOSTON, A tenant rights group on Nov. 2 asked city officials to ban construction of a Level 4 Biolab at Boston University. Approximately 30 people protested, saying the lab poses a health and safety risk to Boston-area residents.
Additionally, some of those opposed to the biolab’s construction want the university to focus on finding a cure for AIDS, cancer and asthma. They also expressed concerns that the research conducted might be inhumane.
The university received federal approval last year to construct the lab that would perform research on lethal pathogens, including Ebola, smallpox, plague and hemorrhagic fever. Supporters of the lab say it will boost the city’s economy by pumping in $2.9 billion over the next 20 years.
