The U.S. House of Representative unanimously passed legislation Feb. 3 that would create a National Center for Campus Public Safety within the U.S. Department of Justice. It will assist colleges and universities in responding to security threats.
The center will be administered through the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program and will provide grants for campus security training and research.
The legislation was sponsored by Rep. Robert ‘Bobby’ Scott (D-VA) and Louie Gohmert (R-TX) and authorizes up to $2.75 million per fiscal year (2009-2013) for the center. It will now be referred to the Senate for consideration.
