SAN PABLO, Calif. – A student police aide was critically injured Nov. 8 during a chase near Contra Costa College (CCC).
According to police, the student aide noticed a man who resembled a person in connection with a stolen car that the CCC police had recovered before 1 p.m.
The aide, 19, chased after the suspect by motorized cart after he radioed for a district police officer. The assailant then approached the cart and shot the aide in point-blank range. He then fled the area.
Authorities would not release the victim’s name; however, a spokeswoman for the college confirmed that the victim attended CCC. He was flown to a regional trauma center where he was reported to be in stable condition.
As a student police aide, the victim wears a uniform but does not carry weapons.
The shooting led to the campus being locked down for an hour. Classes were canceled for the remainder of the day.
Fifty police officers and several local agencies, including the SWAT team, looked for the shooter. Unfortunately, the 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 suspect was not located.
Police withheld a full description of the alleged shooter.
