ATLANTA – Six are dead and 29 more injured after a college baseball team’s charter bus drove off an overpass and crashed March 2 en route to a series of baseball games.
Transporting Bluffton University baseball players to several games in Florida, the bus drove up an exit ramp to the left of the carpool/bus lane, busted through a guardrail and plunged onto the southbound lanes of Atlanta’s I-75 expressway below.
The bus driver, his wife, and four students were killed in the accident. Twenty-nine other passengers sustained injuries, three of which are critical.
The bus was chartered to take the baseball team from the Bluffton (Ohio) university to a series of baseball games in Florida. Investigators believe the driver inadvertently took the exit and missed the stop sign as the bus crashed through the guardrail at full speed. Fatigue is not believed to be a factor as a fresh driver took the wheel an hour before the accident. No injuries to bystanders have been reported.
Back on campus, the last day of classes before spring break were cancelled due to the tragedy.
