CLEVELAND – In response to the Oct. 10 shooting at SuccessTech Academy, seven Cleveland high schools will have three to four metal detectors installed. In addition, some schools will have x-ray machines to check bags.
Eventually, all schools in the area will have metal detectors – including elementary schools. Detectors will also be used at sporting events.
Students, parents, visitors and vendors will be required to go through the machines, which will be running all day. Throughout the day, security officers will check around the campuses to ensure there are no weapons hidden outside.
A private security team has been delegated to operate the detectors. As a result, the union who represents the district’s safety officers has filed a grievance against the district.
