City Receives $70,000 in Safe Routes to School Grant

COLUMBIA, Ill.

As part of a $13.7 million Safe Routes to School grants, the Illinois Department of Transportation has awarded the city of Columbia $70,000 to install speed feedback signs near two schools, according to bnd.com.

The grant program, which is geared towards K-8 schools, is meant to help repair sidewalks, train students in safety and provide equipment for police and crossing guards.

Additionally, the federally-funded program is designed to allow and encourage students to walk or bike to school.
