The California College and University Police Chief Association (CCUPCA) announces its 2009 award recipients. The winners will be honored at the association’s annual conference being held in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., April 8-10.
The award recipients are:
MEDAL OF VALOR
Nominated by Los Angles County Sheriff (Los Angeles Community College District) Captain Ralph Webb, these officers rescued passengers from a deadly passenger train wreck. They entered the burning train cars and pulled passengers to safety.

AWARD OF MERIT
Nominated by Westmont College Director of Campus Safety Tom Bauer, this officer exhibited outstanding leadership during the Tea fire.
- Patrol Officer Karen Huggins
Nominated by Pasadena City College Chief of Police Peter Michael, this officer supervises and mentors over 100 cadets; provides training, oversight, and direction. Conducts team building exercises. defines the true meaning of self pride, discipline and brings great credit upon himself, and educational law enforcement.
- Police Officer Jose Luis Arechiga
Nominated by San Diego Community College District Chief of Police Charles Hogquist, these officers quickly acted using CPR and and AED to save a man’s life.

Nominated by San Bernardino Community College District Chief of Police Pat McCurry, This officer apprehended suspect during the commission of a burglary.
- Officer Adam Keophommachack
These officers initiated an investigation that resulted in the apprehension of a vandalism suspect, preventing further damage to the college.

AWARD OF DISTINCTION
Nominatd by Marin Community College District Chief of Police Charles Lacy, this staff member coordinated and implemented a computerized records information system.

KIRK JOHNSTON MEMORIAL SUPERVISORY AWARD
Nominated by California State University San Bernardino Chief of Police Jimmie Brown, this officer initiated a training and continuing educational program for the University Police Department that improved police operations and service to students and staff.

Nominated by Pacific McGeorge School of Law Director of Public Safety Alan Smith, this officer demonstrated strong leadership abilities; revised the current training program for new hires; maintains continuity in the department by providing strong guidance to the officers and making good management decisions. Mentors staff and offers career guidance to cadets and other officers.
